30: aR RUM - the ROMANS

60 VERSES MAKKAN REVELATION

The persians had defeated the eastern roman empire in all territories near arabia. The persian army was threatening Constantinople in A.D 615 0r 616 and this surah was revealed in Makkah. Pagan arabs were rejoicing in the news of persian victories over the Prophet pbuh and his little band of followers because the Christian romans were believers in one God. The persians argued that the power of Allah SWT could not be supreme as the Prophet pbuh kept proclaiming it to be since the forces of a pagan empire had been able to defeat his worshippers

Two prophecies: Romans would be victorious over the persians. The little persecuted company of muslims in Arabia would have reason to rejoice within 10 years. In A.D 624 the muslims led by the Prophet pbuh overthrew the flower of Arab Chivalry upon the field of Badr.

The main theme of this surah is the contrast between Monotheism and Polytheism. The different fate for idolators and believers. The unity of Allah SWT is emphasised

Allah SWT signs are everywhere. The last day, punishment and rewards, usury, and rain formation. The time on earth will look like an hour

1-10: Disbelievers and their fate

13: Those who disbelieved will be rejected by those they ascribed unto Allah SWT

17: Glorify Allah SWT when ye enter night and morning

18: At the Suns decline and noonday

20: Of Allah SWT signs are this: He created you of dust

21: He created for you helpmeets

22: The creation of the heavens and the earth and the difference of your languages and colours

23: Your slumber by night and day

24: He showeth you lightening for a fear and for a hope and sends water from the from the sky

25: The heavens and the earth stand fast by his command and afterward when he calls you from the earth ye will emerge

36: Mankind rejoices when they taste mercy but if evil befalls them as a consequence of their own deeds, lo they are in despair

38: Give to the kinsman his due and to the needy and to the wayfarer. Such are successful

39: Usury has no increase with Allah SWT, that which you give in charity seeking Allah SWT countenance has increased manifold

46: Of his signs is this: He sendeth herald winds to make you taste his mercy and that ships may sail at his command

47: Messengers were sent before Muhammed pbuh who brought clear proofs of Allah SWT sovereignty. Vengeance was taken upon those who were guilty in regard to them. To help believers is incumbent upon us

53: Thou Muhammed pbuh cannot make none to hear save those who believe in our revelations so that they surrender unto Allah SWT

55: On the day when the hour rises the guilty will vow that they did tarray but an hour. Thus were they ever deceived

56: Those to whom knowledge and faith are given will say: The truth is ye have tarried by Allah SWT decree until the day of resurrection
