5: SURAH AL MAIDAH - THE TABLE SPREAD
120 VERSES MADINAH REVELATION
This Surah was revealed to suit the requirements of the changed conditions which were now different from those prevailing at the time of the revelation of Ali 'Imran and An Nisa as now Muslims have become a stable community and a visible power of Arab. While Surah Al Nisa begins by discussing laws that protect society and relationships Surah al-Ma’idah opens with a discussion on our relationship with food, particularly the animals we consume. It also looks at the missions of Prophet Jesus pbuh and Moses pbuh.
Because of its connection with the treaty of Hudabiyah and the prophet intended visit of Kaaba, rules concerning the journey for Hajj have been mentioned. The story of Adam pbuh two sons has been told to Muslims. Performance of Wudu, bath, punishment for corruption in land and for theft have been specified. Drinking and gambling have been made unlawful. Punishment for breaking of the oath is laid down. Jews and the Christians are warned for their attitude, the errors of their views have been clearly pointed out and invited to follow the right way of Islam.
The desciples of Jesus pbuh asked that a table spread be brought down from heaven. It was revealed during the Prophet pbuh last pilgrimage ‘The Farewell Pilgrimage’ to Makkah and addressed to thousands assembled at Arafat.
The followers of former Prophets had broken covenant. Observance of religious duties. Muslims are told to keep their covenant with Allah SWT.
There is mention of Christians more than other Surahs maybe because it was at a time the Prophet pbuh was at war with certain Christian tribes belonging to the Eastern Roman Empire but there is no proof for this.
3: Forbidden unto you are carrion blood and swine flesh and anything dedicated to other then Allah SWT and the strangled, the beaten, those that fell from a height, goring of the horns, devoured wild beasts, that immolated unto idols. Who is forced by hunger not sin Allah SWT is forgiving merciful.
4: Eat that which the prey you trained catch for you and mention Allah SWT name on it.
6: Wudhu and purify yourselves or if no water is available go to high clean ground and rub your faces and hands with it
19: There was a cessation of the messengers. The Prophet PBUH then came.
26: The land was forbidden 40 years for their wrongdoing and not going to the holy land for fear of the giant people
27: Adam PBUH his two sons only the sacrifice of one was accepted.
30: The other slew his brother
31: A raven scratched the ground to show him where to hide his brothers’ corpse. He became repentant.
32: Who kills a human for other than manslaughter or corruption in the Earth it shall be like he killed all mankind and who saves a life will be like saving all mankind
46: Jesus PBUH son of Mary PBUH confirmed what is in the Torah and was bestowed the Gospel
60: Those who Allah SWT cursed on whom Allah SWT wrath has fallen those who serve idols were turned to apes and swine
72: Whoso ascribeth partners to Allah SWT is forbidden paradise
82: The Jews and idolators are the most vehement in hostility to the believers. The nearest of them in affection to those who believe are Christians because among them are priests and monks.
101: Ask not of things which would trouble you when made known to you. If you ask when the Quran is being revealed they will be made known to you.
“Don’t feel ashamed when giving little for charity; that is because there is always goodness in giving no matter how little.” Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA)
