37: AS SAFFAT - RANGED IN ROW

182 VERSES MAKKAN REVELATION

Reference is to the angels v.164-166 where the revealing angel speaks in person. At the time of the Prophet pbuh coming soothsayers and astrologers through the east were bewildered by the appearance in the heavens of a comet and meteors which baffled and scared them.

The unity of Allah SWT and his power to reward and punish.

Those who attribute offspring to Allah SWT especially the pagans who believed angels were daughters of Allah SWT are threatened. ‘Ranged in row’ refers to the angel who will be lining up on the day of judgement and refuting the idea of them being daughters of Allah SWT.

The story of Abraham pbuh is provided.

1-10: A snapshot of the setting of the day of judgement. There will be angels ranged in row claiming the unity of Allah SWT. Disbelievers will be driven away for their perpetual torment

11-74: The description of the day of judgement. Disbelievers will regret not believing in the word of Allah SWT and on the day of judgement no one can save no one your deeds cant be changed. Those who did good and bad are explored to make a contrast more visible, the two sides sitting not far away from each other. Believers will comment on the fate of disbelievers and how lucky they were not to be in their place

62-69: The tree of zakkum whose fruits will be forced to people in hell to intensify their torment

Noah pbuh was helped by Allah SWT because he was a true believer. Jonah pbuh was saved by Alllah SWT when he was in the ocean and a big fish swallowed him

Snapshots are given of stories of Abraham pbuh Moses pbuh Aaron pbuh Elijan pbuh Lut pbuh stressing Allah SWT rewards to his true servants

149-182: Day of judgement. The disbelievers are again addressed. It is not a debate now but one way speech. There is a succession of rhetorical questions about claims the disbelievers make. The surah goes from one point and comes back to it at the end

6: the lowest heaven has been adorned with planets

93: Abraham pbuh attacked their Gods striking with his right hand

95: He said worship ye that which ye carve

97: They said fling him in the red hot fire

101: He was given tidings of a gentle son

102: Abraham pbuh said to his son he had seen in a dream that he must sacrifice his son. His son told him to do that which he is commanded

103: When they both surrendered to Allah SWT and Abraham pbuh had flung his sondown upon his face

104: Abraham pbuh was called

105: Thous hast fulfilled the vision, Lo thus we reward the good

106: That was a clear test

147: Jonah pbuh was sent to 100,000 folk or more

148: And they believed and were given comfort for a while

164: The angel speaks- There is not one of us but hath his known position

165: Lo we, even we are they who set the ranks

166: Lo we, even we are they who hymn his praise

“Don’t feel ashamed when giving little for charity; that is because there is always goodness in giving no matter how little.” Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA)
