38: SAD-DAWOOD - DAVID

88 VERSES MAKKAN REVELATION

Tradition says the first ten verses were revealed when the leaders of Qureysh tried to persuade Abu Talib pbuh to withdraw his protection from the Prophet pbuh or when Abu Talib pbuh died. The former being the most probable.

The surah recounts stories of previous prophets, heaven and hell are described.

Surah 38 can be divided in 3 sections: 1-11 12-64 66-88

1-11 66-88: remind the reader of the power of Allah SWT and the Quran, hell is described and the fall of satan

12-64: examples of previous messengers David pbuh, Solomon pbuh, Job pbuh to Muhammed pbuh as messengers who faced adversity. Muhammed pbuh is told to remember Abraham pbuh Isaac pbuh and Jacob pbuh all men of strength and vision.

Muhammed pbuh was struggling with rejection from his tribe Qureysh and Allah SWT sent down this revelation to support and encourage him

Entrance to heaven is the final goal of Islam

1-11: The disbelievers are discussed

21: Litigants came to David pbuh and climbed the wall into the royal chamber. They told their story of 99 ewes and 1 ewe and David pbuh bowed himself and fell down prostrate and repented

30: Solomon pbuh was bestowed to David pbuh

34: Solomon pbuh repented he was tried and repented

35: Is the prayer of Solomon pbuh which was granted

36: The wind was made subservient to Solomon pbuh

42: Job pbuh was told to strike the ground with his foot. ‘This is a cool bath and a refreshing drink’

44: Job pbuh was told to take in his hand a branch and smite therewith and not to break his oath

45: Abraham pbuh Isaac pbuh and Jacob pbuh are mentioned they are of the elect the excellent

48: Ishmael pbuh Elisha pbuh and Dhul Kifl are all of the chosen

49: The reward for the devout followers will be nearness to us

75: Iblis did not bow down to Adam pbuh and asked to be reprieved to the day of resurrection and would beguile every one, save they single minded slaves of Allah SWT

David pbuh had many wives and wanted another mans wife and the litigants were sent as an example.

Solomon pbuh son of David pbuh was devoted to his horses and missed prayer, he was reduced to a skeleton on his throne as punishment. Solomon pbuh repented. Solomon pbuh had power over wind and could speak to animals, was commander over a rank of jinn or invisible spirits

Satan will tempt and to lead astray, this test must be passed with strict devotion of Allah SWT

Allah SWT will forgive a believer if his faith is strong and true and he repents for his misdeeds

We can be saved by Allah SWT and given a place in heaven on the day of judgement

Allah SWT is oft forgiving
